Lake Ontario 2025 fishing forecast look very promising for several reasons that we will get into in this post! We will be focusing on the eastern end of the Lake. More sprecifically, the Oswego and Mexico locations.
Oswego
Oswego will be receiving 140,000 salmon fry for our on going net pen operation. This is the same allotment as last year. This past season saw an ample amount of these young of the year being caught during the 2024 season. They grow amazingly fast given the chance that pen rearing gives them with quality nutrition and no predation! Many thanks to Tom Allen and the new Project coordinater Stacy Frugal for leading this fine program. Many thanks also, for all of the volunteers both past and present as well, who participate on keeping it going!
Mexico Bay
Early reports are showing good numbers of brown trout, atlantic salmon, and Lake trout being caught in the Mexico Bay vacinity. I’ve personally seen photos of 20lb class Lake Trout caught so far this season! Different sizes of browns indicative of different age class survivors bodes well of the fishery. It was reported over 1 million brown trout were stocked in Lake Ontario in 2024. Browns will move looking for suitable waters!
Overall Outlook
The Overall outlook for the Lake Ontario 2025 Fishing Forecast for the eastern end of Lake looks very promissing! My sources in the Salmon River report there are huge amounts of post sawn drop back steelhead returning to the Lake. The brown trrout fishing last year was hampered due to south winds, no run off, and gin clear water which scattered them all over the Lake. That means that there should be a good amount of holddover two year old fish to be had! Salmon were here last year in good numbers of one and two year old fish. That also means that there should be good numbers of two and three year old fish available to go after this year as well!
