Dipsey Diver leader lengths are important in both lengths, diameter, and pound test. We will discuss what we use on our divers while running our everyday charters on Lake Ontario. Let’s get into it!!
Best Lead Lengths
Notice best Dipsey Diver leader lengths is plural. That’s because we use different lead lengths for different applications. Generally speaking, we use shorter lead lengths for attractors and longer lead lengths for spoons. Wraps around the rudder of the dipsey determine our actual lengths. For attractors, we use 17 wraps of 25lb test Ande flourocarbon. For our spoon dipseys, 23 wrap gets the nod with 20 lb test Ande. One wrap is considered once around the whole rudder. Note these criteria are for salmon fishing.
Finesse For Browns
When it comes to brown trout, we typically use slide divers and much longer lead lengths. Our typical slide diver lite bites start with 40 ft of 40lb Ande florocarbon and then leader down to a rods length of anywhere from 6 to 10 lb test. If there are kings in the area, we often jump up to 15lb test Ande floro. We used to only use 25lb Ande 40 ft leads to the leader down swivel, but all it takes is one break-off to change your mind. I don’t have to tell you just how expensive tackle has become! Note too, that we havn’t seen a significant drop in bites going to the 40lb and more importantly, no diver losses!
Diver Wraps
Dipsey Diver wraps are a common way for measuring lead lengths for most of the charters we deal with on a day to day basis! You will find that most boats have slightly different lead lengths and a subsequent number of diver wraps. It is important to note that it is best to experiment and find what works best for your boat. Diver rod lengths, Diver brand, boat speeds, and gunnel heights all make a difference in the presentation. One thing to watch for when a boat is landing a fish is if they have to hand line it in or not. The lead lengths we use require hand lining to bring the fish to net.
